CINCINNATI – (January 30, 2012) - Why do you hate your job? Well, it’s not about you. It’s about your boss. Most people who quit their job are trying to get away from a bad boss. If you like the work you do, and the people you work with, what can you do? Well, there is a way to fix your boss. Help is on the way. It’s called executive coaching.

It’s not that difficult to improve business behavior and create a more enjoyable work environment, states Karl Corbett, author of the Sherpa Executive Coaching Survey. Executive coaching is designed to produce positive changes in business behavior. This year’s survey shows widespread movements toward leadership programs that help build better bosses.

After years of progress, executive coaching has become a permanent fixture in modern organizations, the survey finds. Both the credibility and the value of coaching are seen at all time highs.

Perhaps because so many workers are dissatisfied, demand for coaching is increasing. In its seventh year, the Sherpa Coaching Survey finds demand for coaching on a significant uptrend.

Credentials for coaching have become a hot issue, as well. The survey finds that only three in ten executive coaches follow a published process. However, nine out of ten HR and training professionals say that standards of practice are ‘important’ or ‘absolutely essential’. This creates tremendous opportunity for those who train and certify executive coaches, especially universities’ executive education programs.

The survey also explores what makes a great coach, and offers new features on communication technology, coaching costs, licensing and regulations.

As always, this research report is available as a free download, available at www.sherpacoaching.com.

7th Annual Survey Underway

For each of the past six years, coaches and customers have gained new insight into the business of executive coaching. The data is not coming from a professional pollster or marketing group. The survey comes from the coaching industry itself.

The Sherpa Executive Coaching Survey is the longest-running research in the industry, uniquely positioned to evaluate the evolving world of coaching. Every year, full research reporting is released in January. Tens of thousands see the results at no charge.

What few people see is the effort behind the scenes. Karl Corbett, Managing Partner at Sherpa Coaching, is the survey’s creator. He volunteers six weeks each year collecting data, analyzing it and reporting out to thousands of executives, coaches and clients.

“Back in 2006, there wasn’t any research for us to work from,” Corbett said. “So, we asked what our university students and training and development experts would want to know, because we wanted to add depth to the work we did. We’re emerging from chaos into clarity, and the survey is part of that process.”

Last year’s survey revealed that new technology makes face-to-face coaching less dependent on geography. “Some top-level coaches already rely on high-end video conferencing, but tools like Skype make technology affordable for just about anyone,” Corbett said.

“We’re barely scratching the surface of human potential. With machines doing a great deal of our manual work, we can sit, think, and realize our potential in ways that build relationships, teams and companies. As coaching becomes more standardized, this profession will become more credible and its results more predictable. We will see more use of coaching in the future. There may come a point at which it will plateau. Then we’ll have to go onto the next frontier, but coaching will be on the upswing for a while,” Corbett explained.

Executive coaching is growing in credibility and scope, according to the 2011 survey. Demand for accurate research and reliable data is higher than ever. What truly unites coaches across continents, beyond trade organizations and social networks is the annual document that gives a voice to the coaches and “power to the people.”

The executive coaching survey collected data from November 15 through December 15, 2011. To view the results go to Sherpa Coaching.

Programs for teams and leaders

We’re introducing you to the Sherpa Leadership Institute. Going back a few days, we shared programs for teams and leaders, HERE and diagnostics that tell you what you need right now. Here’s a quick summary of those team-based programs, so you’ll have all the features in one place. Feel free to call us (513) 232.0002 for a frank discussion on what will take your executives, managers and successors to higher effectiveness. A complete package of printed materials is available. To get yours, write execed@sherpacoaching.com

Team Leader Assimilation

First impressions, created in a controlled and positive environment, get a new leader off to a running start with their team. The most critical component for a new team leader is the working relationship. Get it started in the most positive way possible.

Team Leader Calibration

Restore a leader’s image in the eyes of his team. Reconcile their differences. Clear up misunderstandings. By fostering truth in their communication, you’ll see a positive Impact on Business (IOB). Build confidence and teamwork. Teach a team what matters to their leader, and why that matters to them. This proven process guarantees everyone will be happier and more successful.

Team Coaching

Does your team have a big project and a tough deadline? Do they need to improve team dynamics? Based on the Sherpa method for one-on-one coaching, the team coaching process offers twelve intensive sessions for a leadership group. They’ll communicate more clearly. They’ll work together more effectively. They’ll get results.

Team Unification

Develop better communication and cooperation in a team which clearly has problems. An optional ‘Team Dynamics’ diagnostic allows a team to share their weaknesses in a discreet way. This helps guide an exercise in reconciliation. Achieve common goals. Create new bonds.

Team Effectiveness and Communication

A powerful program based on the DiSC assessment for communication styles. It’s a ‘game-changer’ for a leadership team. Team Effectiveness combines training in communication styles with ‘on the spot’ coaching to create positive changes in business behavior and generate real cooperation.

The Sherpa Leadership Institute (SLI) is a framework of proven programs based on the Sherpa Coaching process. Take a look at this list of SLI programs for executives and successors, and see if there’s something your organization needs:

Leadership Summit - Executives and their successors are often promoted for what (and who) they know, rather than superior leadership characteristics. This sets them up to flounder and to fail, often losing respect and losing key subordinates. The Sherpa Leadership Summit is a one week intensive program that ensures top leaders and their successors are prepared to become complete leaders. Attendees need a genuine desire to enhance their leadership abilities, and openness to finding the weaknesses which stand in the way.

Executive Coaching - Executive coaching is about changing business behavior and creating a positive Impact on Business (IOB). Six years of research tell us that coaching can correct weaknesses that hurt a leader’s relationships. More often, Executive Coaching is used to develop rising stars, and to make sure a succession plan works well. You have both situations in your organization. A Certified Sherpa Coach can produce positive, permanent changes in business behavior in just 90 days.

Expert Facilitated Coaching (XFC) - When two top people don’t work well together, it’s imperative to repair and rebuild the relationship. An expert third party facilitator can solve one-on-one issues between a leader and a direct report. A Sherpa facilitator brings out new ways to deal with situations and mend a working relationship. This allows a leader and a direct report to communicate in a controlled and practical way to solve their differences.

Coaching Skills 101 - Managers and executives who are untrained in coaching skills tend to manage rather than lead. Specifically, they micromanage, deliver expectations poorly and fail to hold people accountable. They may also act unpredictably or appear to show favoritism in their decision-making. What’s the result? People become stressed, unhappy or completely disengaged. Coaching Skills 101 changes the game for managers and teaches them how to lead from a coaching perspective.

Coaching Skills 201 - Sustainability of coaching leadership comes from integration into a company’s culture. Coaching Skills 201 teaches senior managers how to integrate coaching and leadership into an organization’s existing work and development plans. Managers, leaders and executives often fail to capitalize on employee’s ‘teachable moments.’ If your leadership has not had specific, process-driven training to help them create coaching moments, those opportunities are slipping way without any visible symptoms. Get them the training they need, and you’ll see a world of difference.

The Sherpa Leadership Institute (SLI) is a framework of proven programs based on the Sherpa Coaching process. Take a look at these SLI programs for leaders and teams, and see if there’s something your organization needs:

Team Leader Assimilation - Newly promoted or incoming executives have to get results quickly. Sherpa’s New Leader Assimilation helps them do exactly that. New leaders going through this program with their team will be in a better place. They’ll deliver expectations using a fresh new process. Their team will understand and act. New Leader Assimilation goes straight to the fundamentals of communication style. Then, the new leader and the team come to common terms on values, cooperation and an action plan for better teamwork. The result? Months’ worth of progress made in a single session. The leader has to be open to the experience and willing to share on a personal level.

Team Leader Calibration - This is program is designed for a manager or executive who is ineffective at leading a team. Perhaps the leader is not communicating well, or not saying enough. Team members might disrespect, ignore or work around their leader. The Leader Calibration program helps a leader and his team share their values, priorities and what’s really important. A Sherpa facilitator engineers a path to reconciliation, and everything needed to get some truth on the table, and better understanding all the way around.

Team Coaching - How do you help a team who has a critical goal with tight deadlines? The Sherpa Team Coaching process can lead a management group through to the finish line. How do you fix a team that can’t pull together? Find out what’s wrong. With our Team Dynamics Survey, the team tells us, discreetly, what’s wrong, and what to work on first. Any executive, managerial or supervisory team can benefit. We apply the Sherpa executive coaching process to group dynamics . . . and create agreement, unity and efficiency.

Team Unification - For teams that are ineffective or unable to reach agreement, the Team Unification program makes a difference. If your team has members who don’t produce, don’t follow through, or otherwise fail to meet expectations, the Team Unification program gets to the heart of the matter. You’ll end up with stronger working relationships, a uniform code of conduct, and an accountable ‘can do’ attitude.

Team Effectiveness and Communication - Perhaps you have a management team that doesn’t cooperate well, because they do not communicate well. When a team learns the four basic communication styles, things get better . . . much better. This program includes a personal style assessment for each participant. They’ll know their own style, when to temper it and when to adapt to others’ styles. Communication between team members improves. Good things start to happen.

The Sherpa Leadership Institute (SLI) is a framework of proven programs based on the Sherpa Coaching process. Take a look at these SLI programs that help you establish an internal coaching force, and see if there’s something your organization needs:

Executive Coaching Certification (CSC) - Are you grooming your next generation of leaders? If you are really serious about talent development, you’ll want an ‘in house’ executive coach. Having and ‘in-house’ coach can reinforce your corporate culture as you build your leadership bench.

Trainer Certification for Coaching Skills 101 - Does empowerment seem difficult to do? Does ‘engagement’ really mean something? You can make empowerment and engagement real, by building a coaching culture. With a Sherpa-certified coaching skills trainer on your staff, the power of the Coaching Skills curriculum is supported and sustained in your organization.

Trainer Certification for Coaching Skills 201 (Master CST) - You are in the groove. You’re building a coaching organization. Skills and behavior are married, to produce a positive impact on business (IOB). Now what? Your success with Coaching Skills 101 creates continuing demand for advanced training. Coaching Skills 201 certifies in-house champions who can integrate coaching and leadership into performance development plans. Now you’re building a very bright future.
